Over dit boek

This richly illustrated study traces Celtic art in Britain and Ireland from pagan antiquity into the Christian era, using archaeology, classical testimony, museum treasures, and manuscript evidence to uncover its origins and development. It argues that Celtic art was never an isolated tradition, but the product of mixed peoples, long cultural exchange, and repeated discoveries that have reshaped older theories. The opening chapters place the Celts within the wider Aryan migrations into Europe, then follow Greek and Roman writers as they describe these fierce, warlike peoples and the powerful visual type immortalized in Pergamon's sculpture. From there, the book moves into the Iron Age worlds of Hallstatt and La Tène, where graves, weapons, chariots, helmets, fibulæ, and ornamented metalwork reveal the rise of a distinctive Celtic style across Central Europe and Gaul. The later chapters turn to the brilliance of Irish Christian art, celebrating masterpieces such as the Ardagh Chalice, the Tara Brooch, the Clonmacnois pin, and other works where gold, silver, enamel, glass, amber, and intricate zoomorphic ornament unite utility with beauty. Throughout, the book shows how Celtic craftsmanship transformed everyday objects into enduring symbols of identity, faith, and artistic genius. This edition has been fully restored with modern typesetting, custom cover design.
