Over dit boek

Thomas Hughes presents the life of Christ as a searching test of courage, character, and true manliness. In a reflective preface, he explains that the book grew out of his teaching and public addresses, and he asks whether Christianity weakens masculine strength or fulfills it. Setting courage at the center of moral life, he argues that if Christ cannot stand as the highest model of manly virtue, then the faith will fail the conscience of the rising generation. The narrative unfolds against the harsh realities of first-century Palestine, where Roman power, Jewish unrest, and the authority of the Jerusalem priesthood create a world of political strain and spiritual conflict. Hughes contrasts physical bravery with higher moral courage, insisting that true manliness means self-sacrifice, loyalty to truth, and steadfastness under pressure. Against this backdrop, Christ's ministry emerges as a drama of spiritual heroism: He calls publicans, dines with sinners, heals on the Sabbath, exposes hypocrisy, and confronts the Pharisees with calm authority. As opposition grows and even His disciples misunderstand His mission, He moves toward Jerusalem, the Passover, and the final costly fulfillment of His work. This edition has been fully restored with modern typesetting, custom cover design.
