Time in quantum mechanics is not an observable — it is an external parameter fed into the Schrödinger equation from the outside. General relativity, by contrast, treats time as a dynamical entity that bends with matter. Between these two descriptions lies a gap that has remained open for nearly a century.
This book closes that gap — not by quantizing gravity, but by extracting time from the inside.
Building on the Page–Wootters mechanism, the author derives a unified relational-time formula that produces the thermodynamic arrow of time, quantum decoherence, and entropic asymmetry from a single, timeless quantum constraint. The framework is validated numerically through a comprehensive toy model and tested experimentally on IBM Quantum hardware (ibm_torino), making it one of the first proposals in quantum foundations with direct empirical support.
Organized in seven parts — from historical motivation through mathematical analysis, numerical simulation, hardware experiment, and philosophical implications — the book is fully self-contained. Every derivation is given in full, every numerical result is reproducible with open-source code, and every conceptual consequence is discussed explicitly.
Topics include:
• The Problem of Time in quantum gravity
• The Page–Wootters mechanism and its modern extensions
• A closed-form formula unifying emergent time, decoherence, and entropy
• Covariance theorems, continuum limits, and information geometry
• Robustness analysis and condition-violation tests
• Circuit-level IBM Quantum experiment with error mitigation
• The "omniscient observer" and the breakdown of atemporality
• Connections to gravity, holography, and the philosophy of time
Suitable for advanced undergraduates, graduate students, and researchers in quantum foundations, quantum information, and quantum gravity. Multiple reading paths — fast track, mathematician's, experimentalist's, and philosopher's — are provided.
