The story begins with Jürgens' grandfather, Heinrich Bockelmann, who emigrated from Bremen to Russia at the end of the 19th century. Spanning three generations, the narrative arc stretches from the end of the Tsarist era through the Russian Revolution and the two World Wars to the Cold War and the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.
