Acerca de este libro

Is Romania truly the heir of Rome? Why does a Latin language thrive in an Orthodox country rich in Slavic vocabulary? How did a state that insists it was “never conquered” spend centuries negotiating with empires? And how did it move from medieval principalities to communism, televised revolution, NATO membership, and mass emigration in barely a century?

This book follows Romania’s long and complicated journey from ancient Dacia to the European Union — through conquest, improvisation, survival, ambition, and reinvention. It examines the Dacians and the Roman conquest, not only as historical events but as foundations of modern identity. It traces the rise of Wallachia and Moldavia as frontier states balancing between Ottoman, Hungarian, and Russian power. It explores the 19th-century creation of a modern nation-state and the dramatic expansion of 1918, when Greater Romania briefly seemed to fulfill a historic dream.

The story does not avoid catastrophe. World War II, territorial losses, dictatorship, and participation in the Holocaust reshaped the country profoundly. The communist decades that followed brought forced industrialization, surveillance, monumental architecture, and the carefully constructed cult of Nicolae Ceaușescu. The regime’s collapse in 1989 unfolded on live television, leaving behind both liberation and unanswered questions.

The decades after communism brought improvised capitalism, corruption scandals, reform efforts, and a determined strategic shift toward NATO and the European Union. At the same time, millions of Romanians left to work abroad, transforming the country’s demography and redefining what it means to belong to the nation.

Throughout, the book returns to the central puzzle of Romanian identity. Is Romania Western or Eastern? Latin or Balkan? Periphery or participant? The answer is never simple. Romania is a country that borrowed from everyone, submitted to many, belonged fully to none — and continues to define itself at the crossroads of empires and institutions.

Written with clarity, critical distance, and a sharp eye for historical irony, A Brief History of Romania offers a compelling portrait of a nation that has survived by adapting, explaining, and reinventing itself.
