Tom Brown’s School Days

The Browns, Thomas Hughes tells us, are a fighting family: wherever hard knocks are going, the nearest one shoves in his carcass. And no Brown can leave a lame dog stranded on the wrong side of a stile.

In 1830s England, Tom Brown leaves the familiar lanes of the Vale of White Horse for Rugby School, where boyhood brings new loyalties—and hard lessons. Kind-hearted and energetic, Tom must find his footing among boys who can make school life a trial, while learning what courage and character demand of him. Hughes writes with warmth and a wry eye for the stubborn family spirit Tom carries with him. At Rugby, will that spirit be enough when the knocks are no longer just a game?
