About this book

I suoi disegni sono un’impronta, un calco, un segno inciso capace di evocare e re-interpretare forme antiche per esigenze moderne | Aldo van Eyck searched for the permanent traits of architecture to find in archaic forms the principle with which to design new architectures. Drawing is the logical consequence of the architect’s lifelong search for the eternal and essential. He almost always drew layouts because it was on these plans that he based the conception of the whole building; in fact he acknowledged that they are at the origin of his designs. The search for the original matrix in a design and its representation involves repeating simple aggregative laws of form referring to figurative imagery. His drawings are a footprint, a mould, an engraved sign capable of evoking and re-interpreting ancient forms for modern needs.
