Op het prachtige Prince Edward Island, in Canada, wordt een wees genaamd Anne Shirley per ongeluk naar Green Gables gestuurd, het huis van Matthew en Marilla Cuthbert. Ondanks het misverstand besluiten ze haar te adopteren, en Ana vindt al snel vriendschap, liefde en geluk in haar nieuwe huis.
